Germander - 4" Pot

Germander (primarily Teucrium chamaedrys, known as wall germander or common germander) is a low-growing, evergreen perennial herb in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to Mediterranean regions. This woody sub-shrub reaches 6–12 inches tall, forming dense mounds or creeping ground covers with small, shiny, bright-green, scalloped leaves and spikes of attractive pink to lavender flowers in summer. Drought-tolerant, aromatic, and bee-friendly, it's popular in herb gardens, knot gardens, borders, edging, rock gardens, or as low hedges. Varieties include upright wall germander and prostrate creeping forms for landscaping versatility.

Historically used in traditional European and Native American folk medicine for digestive issues, gout, fever, inflammation, and as a diuretic tea, germander has limited culinary roles, such as flavoring meats, roasting potatoes, or alcoholic beverages. However, due to severe hepatotoxicity (liver damage, hepatitis, and fatalities linked to furan-containing compounds like teucrin A), internal consumption is considered unsafe and banned or warned against in many countries. Modern use focuses on ornamental gardening, potpourri, wreaths, or as a pollinator plant—avoid ingesting without expert guidance.
