Potted Raspberry - Shortcake

Raspberry Shortcake is a compact red raspberry supplied as one live potted plant. Its dense, rounded habit generally reaches about 2–3 feet tall, making it especially useful for patios, small gardens, raised beds, and edible borders where full-size raspberry canes would take too much room. The thornless stems simplify routine care and harvesting, while medium-size berries provide a convenient summer crop for fresh use.

For container culture, choose a large pot with generous drainage holes and fill it with a high-quality, freely draining mix. Place the plant in full sun, water thoroughly whenever the upper layer begins to dry, and never leave the root ball standing in water. A container dries faster than garden soil, particularly during hot or windy weather, so monitor moisture closely while flowers and berries are developing. Feed according to plant response and refresh the top layer of mix as it settles.

In the ground, set the crown at its existing depth in fertile, well-drained soil. The compact canes normally hold themselves without staking, although a small support can be useful in exposed locations or under a heavy crop. Raspberry Shortcake fruits on second-year floricanes. After harvest, remove only the canes that produced berries and retain healthy first-year primocanes for next summer. Thinning dead or crowded stems during dormancy keeps the center open to light and air.

This raspberry can fruit by itself, so no named pollinizer partner is required. Pollinating insects still help flowers develop evenly; avoid applying insect-control products to open bloom.
